Catholic Bishops Announce New Death Penalty Campaign

EJUSA Email update: March 21st

Dear friends,

Great news! Today the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops announced a major new initiative against the death penalty.

As part of the campaign launch, the Bishop's released new polling information showing that support for the death penalty among Catholics has dropped to below 50%. This is a big shift from past polls, which showed support at above 60%! Even more exciting, the poll showed that 29% of Catholics who once supported the death penalty have now changed their minds.

The poll also found that younger Catholics and Catholics who regularly attend mass are more likely to oppose the death penalty.

You can support this effort! Here are some ideas:

1. The story of the Catholic poll was carried in newspapers across the country. Look out for an article in your local paper and send a letter to the editor in response. Your letter can be brief, noting that you applaud the new campaign and urge your elected officials to heed the continuing shift of public opinion away from the death penalty, as evidenced by the new poll.

2. If you're Catholic, send a letter to your bishop and priest telling them how excited you are about the new national campaign and asking them to speak out about the death penalty in your state.

3. See if your Catholic church bulletin can include an article about the new campaign in their next issue.

For more information on the new campaign, visit the Bishops' new website at www.ccedp.org.
