Weekly Report
July 13, 2000
Friends,
YES, the Moratorium Now! campaign has reached a major milestone---1,000 groups have joined the call for a halt to executions, including 26 local governments to date (Hillsborough and Davidson, both in NC are the most recent additions this week). Also joining the call recently has been the NAACP, 14 Democratic parties in TX, the National Association of Social Workers, the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, and the Catholic Diocese of San Angelo, TX to name a few.
We are so excited! And the momentum is building. The press is responding. The death penalty moratorium movement is in the press somewhere in the country almost daily. More recently, the Moratorium Now! campaign was covered by USA Today and The Washington Post. Its great!
We are on our way to reaching the goal of 2,000 by the end of the year, IF we all work together. If you know of any group who would consider passing a resolution calling for a moratorium on executions, please approach them or let us know how to contact them. For organizing materials, see our website below. Give us a call anytime, 301-699-0042, for ideas or support.
Moratorium 2000 is also gaining steam with their petition campaign, reaching almost 100,000 signatures in the US so far! To help gather petitions, see their website <www.moratorium2000.org>
Together, we can continue to pressure for a halt to executions!
