CREATING INSPIRED SPACES
ON A LIMITED BUDGET |
 |
 |
Janet Nelson, Director of Industry Relations, Demco, Inc.
With a bit of imagination, we have found that it is possible to do a little refreshing
and get more mileage out of a space that has become dated or is less than inspiring.
Even though it isn’t always the ultimate solution, a modest investment can often
make enough of a difference to start prompting other changes.

SIX WAYS TO CREATE IMPACT IN YOUR LIBRARY
 |
UPDATED SEATING
Updating seating provides a perfect opportunity to introduce new styles and
colors into a space. This also allows for more variety, incorporating mobility
and providing for power and data options. |

 |
IMPACTFUL SIGNAGE
Introducing colorful graphics is an inexpensive way to create impact and add
personality. A variety of materials are available depending upon desired
appearance, budget and how permanent the application will be. Incorporating
clear and simple signage that either complements or matches the other
graphics in the area adds to the self-service nature of the area and is another
way to tie together the desired color and style of a space. |

 |
FLEXIBLE DISPLAY
Introducing a few interesting, flexible display fixtures is a way to provide
merchandising for a browsing collection or special features and also begins
introducing complementary mixed-material furniture to update a space. Often
traditional and transitional or contemporary styles can coexist in a space,
creating interest and a more modern look. |

 |
INSPIRING END PANELS
When the opportunity exists to refresh or add end panels to shelving, they are
another way to introduce merchandising opportunities, reinforce a new color
story or add personality in the form of relevant graphics. |

 |
REDUCED CLUTTER
The least expensive way to make an impact in a space is to reduce the clutter
that has accumulated over the years. Taking a look at a space through the
eyes of a newcomer can be effective. The accumulation of excess materials
and equipment is often overlooked on a daily basis but provides opportunities
to reclaim additional space or simply make an area more inviting and ready to
take on a new look. |

 |
MAXIMIZED SPACES
Finally, take advantage of under utilized space. Take a look at the floor plan
and see how the space is really being used. It may be an opportunity
to remove furniture that is no longer being used, or at least rearrange to get
better space utilization. Don’t overlook areas around poles or on walls that
can be used for additional display areas or provide an opportunity to get more
technology located in a space. |
